Randwick girls do us proud at B2B

NSW Hill Climb Championships
First up on Saturday morning were the NSW State Hill Climb Championships. The hill climb is held on a service road that runs up behind Mt Panorama and is approx. 4km in length. It starts with a false flat and ends with one too, but in the middle it’s very steep. A highlight is being able to ride back down the race-track with some people hitting over 90km down Conrod Straight.

The Club had 16 riders having a go, many for the first time. We had some great results with four medalists: Anna Murray, Dan McGuigan, Sue Jackson & Vicki Arrowsmith.

Following the hill climb were the criterium races around a tight circuit in the middle of Bathurst. Our U17 riders were up first and unfortunately the drought in Bathurst decided to break just before their race – this was welcomed by the locals but not by our riders.

We had Will Heffernan, Brayden Bloch and Thibaut Philippe all lining up in the U17 race. Given the conditions it made it tough for the guys but they all stayed strong and completed the race.

At 3pm the rain had cleared and this saw our Division 2 riders: Dan McGuigan, Adam Socha, Matt Yaxley, Shariff Shockair, Daniele Vanolini, Allan Smith, Dave Jackson and Sean Bloch all getting ready to race. In a big field the hurt was on early and it was a tough race for all involved. Shariff rode strongly as did Allan and Adam but it was Dan who was the sole survivor by the end to cross the line in 13th place. Well done to everyone for pinning on a number, the club was very well represented.

B2B – Long Course
There were 36 Randwick riders on the start line for the 110km race. Riders were set off in their age groups with two groups together, in some cases this meant close to 400 riders in a bunch! As you can imagine the first few kilometres and the first of the rolling hills would sort things out.

We had some excellent results with riders qualifying for the UCI World Masters Championships which are to be held in Poland later this year.

B2B – Short Course
There were 23 Randwick riders entered in the 70km race. They start this race in three waves, which are self-seeded. Most of us elected to go in the middle wave. The highlight was seeing seven girls from the Club competing. We all met in Blayney and had a quick warm-up as it had started to rain just as we were arriving.

On the start line were also some of our younger members – Simon Frias, Mathis Gizardin , Zac Serov, Will Heffernan, Brayden Bloch and Thibaut Philippe. It goes without saying that for young Simon and Mathis to complete the race is just fantastic. We rode past Simon early on and he had the biggest smile on his face. The conditions were cool and wet, so well done boys. Special mention to Thibaut for finishing 17th overall in a cracking time of 1:47.02

The results from our women in particular really need to be mentioned. Clare Menzies, Fiona Kwok, Audrey Braun and Sue Jackson all finished in the top 15 out of all the 200 women. However in their individual age groups this was how they placed:

19-34: Kirsty 8th

35-39: Angelique 4th

40-44: Clare 2nd and Fiona 3rd

45-49: Sue 1st and Audrey 2nd

60-64: Vicki 2nd
